JUNE

Investment is for all

June is Danske Banks’s flagship investment app and is the first digital advisor launched in Scandinavia. With an initial sum as low as 100 kr., anyone can invest. June is simple to use, low involvement, it’s investing for you, for me, for anyone. It uses a mix of technologies to create the right investment profile based on you and your finances.

I joined as a Product Designer at Mobilelife to build the UI and UX of the JUNE app. My goal was to create a radically simple solution for both inexperienced and experienced investors. There was an already existing web app and loose branding guidelines when I joined. June for iOS got launched in June 2017.

My process

At the core of my process for this project lays the double helix model of convergent and divergent thinking. The process is thoroughly described in the following diagram. I picked up the process during my education at KEA – Copenhagen’s School of Design.

I built upon it and added my own twist.

It has 4 core elements: Question, Insight, Solution and finally a handout. The QISH model is a mental framework in approaching problem solving.

The Question phase is all about inquiries: the what, the how, and the why. The Insight phase includes both desk research in the form of expert knowledge, statistics, general documentation and field research: interviews, surveys. The Solution phase, in the context of product design will include UX and UI methods. Some of the UX methods include persona creation, flow design, wireframes and prototypes. The UI methods include moodboarding, look&feel, prototypes. Of course with the contextual user testing, iterating, feedback and approval. The final stage is getting the stakeholders happy and the users happy.

Reception

Since launch the app was received with great success. Upon its release in 2017 June becomes #1 in the Finance category on the App store. The following year, the app got awarded by Financial Times the Fintech app of the year. Close to the end of 2019, June hit the 1 billion kr. mark, that’s the amount of assets under investment. Currently the app has been sitting comfortably in the App Store with a reviewed average of 4,4 stars from more that 5.000 people. Those are some great numbers considering it’s deployment only in Denmark and Sweden.

Lessons learned

Finance is a heavily regulated sector with a conservative work culture, however, under the heavy pressure from the tech companies even large and slow organisations will push innovation.

Working on June was an exciting ride. Exciting was also the time in tech history, the disruption of the financial sector. June did not have the advantage of the first mover but had the backing of a major bank and managed to become the biggest digital investment app in Scandinavia.

At a personal level I developed a better understanding of the complex financial mechanisms but I am nowhere close to fully understanding them. My hope is that the product we created feels safe enough that people with little financial literacy give it a try and improve their financial situation.
